DESIGN 252: Chicago Walking Sketch Tour and Museums

Learning Objectives

  • List field drawing techniques.
  • Develop ones drawing skills.
  • Define techniques to capture shape, form, light, shade, and values.
  • Identify and discuss the sculpted forms encountered during the course.


The drawing program is designed to study in detail, through a variety of drawing techniques, the rich environment of Chicago’s architecture and its water features. The course begins with a brief lecture about the most prominent features visited during the sketch tour. Observational and analytical drawing structured around the traditional sketchbook, the goal is to expand student’s compendium of design resources and concludes with shared discoveries and observations.
